 About Me

I’m a poet and novelist living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.   Have a background in critical studies, particularly of African-American poets.  Besides seven books of poetry, my work includes a fiction trilogy, short stories, essays, and a musical drama.  I find inspiration in my neighborhood, politics, art, and nature.  I call the street “my Muse.”

Excerpts

The Cave

When he came to this dumb town I knew he meant trouble, but hell! anything woulda been an improvement in this wooden asshole of a place. A real Main Street, Boresville capital of Doris Daylight-Saving-Archie Bankerland. The kind of place you’re born in or burn in, forget about visit. Me with my nowhere big ideas, never telling the whole bunch of them to fuck off. What a bunch of stiffs with their nice little kaffee klatch society you’d want to smash the dishes of. The kind of snot you wouldn’t want up your nose. So we called the guy “Duke,” which was what he called himself, and though some wanted his pedigree and shit before they’d give him the time on their Mickey Mousetrap watches, I size up the dude and think, “Thank holy crap you’re not a squid like the rest.”
